Meet the Vikings

Viking Life - Settlements

The Vikings in Scandinavia lived in long-houses which were made of wood or earth with thatched roofs. One end of the building was used for animals and the other end for people. Long-houses were used by the Vikings who lived in Scotland.

Most Vikings were farmers and lived on isolated farms. However some Vikings also living in towns. Archaeogolists excavated a large Viking town in England at York, which the Vikings called Jorvik.

York was a Viking town from AD867 to about AD1000. The people lived in houses made of wood and/or wattle-and-daub with thatched roofs. These houses were very much like Anglo-Saxon houses.
