Square-headed Brooches

Drawing of square headed brooch

This was one of the largest types of brooch worn by Anglo-Saxons. It had a large square top or head plate, hence the name. These brooches were worn both in pairs and singly.

Square-headed brooches were usually ornately decorated, often with animal patterns.

Such large brooches were also probably very expensive, because they would be difficult and time consuming to make, so these brooches were probably worn by wealthy Anglo-Saxon women.

This type of brooch appears to have been in fashion from AD500-575. The Anglo-Saxons had changing fashions just like we do today.
