Applied Brooches

Back plate of applied brooch from Birghthampton Oxfordshire (AN1992.169)

Applied brooches look like saucer brooches but were made of separate plates of bronze.

The decoration was fixed onto a plain metal back plate, like to one in the picture. This means these brooches often fallen apart when excavated.

These brooches, like most others, were worn in pairs and appear to have been in fashion from the early fifth to the sixth centuries.
