Coin of Harold - head side

This coin is known as a silver penny and is made of silver. It is about the size of a modern five pence coin .

We known this coin was made at the time of King Harold II in 1066 because the inscription on it says "HAROLD REX ANG " which means "King Harold, King of the English".

On this side of the coin Harold is shown with a beard wearing a crown and with a sceptre.

From the other side of the coin we know the name of the moneyer who made the coin, Aelfwi (In the picture it says this at the top of the coin).

We also know that the coin was made in Oxford because the inscription says "OXENEFO" (this is on the bottom of the coin in the picture).

In the middle of the coin it says "PAX" which means peace.

Can you now read these inscriptions?

What does this coin tell us about the Anglo-Saxons?

The coins shows there was a moneyer making coins in Oxford in 1066. It shows peace was obviously a concern. Harold's head shows he had a beard. This may have been a fashion of the time. It also tells us that by this time the Anglo-Saxons were calling themselves English.
